What is Complementary Alternative Medicine?

More of my photo http://www.istockphoto.com/user_view.php?id=4534930Since you’re a newbie to the world of Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) this section is specifically written for you.  We’ll explain what CAM is and what CAM is not.  We’ll explain in detail what alternative medical therapies we practice at Catch A Fish Acupuncture & Wellness and how each of these will help to heal your condition.

CAM is the commonly used acronym for Complementary Alternative Medicine.  Complementary means we work hand-in-hand with your conventional medical treatment plan.  Alternative means we’ll use the most powerful treatments that we’ve found most effective for your particular disorder.  These treatments are not used in conventional medicine and thus labeled alternative.  While the treatments are labeled alternative they have been in consistent practice for thousands of years.  And by “thousands” we mean Acupuncture, Massage, and Herbs started to develop during the era of Cleopatra and the building of the pyramids.

What we know for sure is that no form of medicine has all the answers…if it did you would already be well today.  What it takes is gathering the new ideas of medicine and the old ideas of medicine to create a highly effective treatment plan that works and gets you better.

What CAM is not….

Acupuncture Alternative Medicine

CAM is not intended to be a stand alone medicine. In our view to take either CAM or Convention Medicine alone you would not have a very healthy person.  You need both.

Conventional Medicine is the best medicine in the world for traumas and life or death interventions. If you’re in a car crash and you need to reattach your arm there’s no better medicine then the local Shock Trauma Center.  If you have a heart condition with an 80% blockage there’s no better medicine then your local cardiologist.  The sicker you are the better the Conventional Medical team can treat you by taking something out that’s diseased, fighting something with an “anti” medication that kills things, suppressing a body reaction that will save your life, fighting an epidemic that’s killed thousands of people.  No better medicine on earth then Conventional Medicine.

However, what happens to the people with a 30% heart blockage who can’t trigger the heart tests and show no symptoms? Or the patient at 25% kidney failure who has no symptoms yet? Or the patients who aren’t sick enough to trigger the Conventional medicine alarm bells because all their numbers are in the normal range?  These patients wake up exhausted and feel like they haven’t slept all night. They check off 15-20 symptoms that something’s wrong or hurting but chalk them up to “age” (but they’re only 50) or “I guess that’s how it goes for me.”  These patients we call the half sick people.  Half sick because Conventional Medicine has no category for them them.  Not sick enough for the life altering interventions that Conventional Medicine is great at.  Most commonly their primary care doctor will say, “Come back in 6 months and if it gets worse maybe we can do something then.”  Or commonly they’ll prescribe a happy pill and sent on their way. With Acupuncture we can help these symptoms today.

How will Catch a Fish Acupuncture & Wellness help you?

Have you ever wondered what’s the key to the whole ball of wax of being healthy?  How is it that these masters of Tai Chi and Yoga can be 90+ and look so vibrant?  Why is it that when we’re young you can fall down and get up 100x a day and not even have a bruise but at 40 you’re out for a week with a huge lump from the fall?  I believe one definition of health from Chinese Medicine sums it up best.  Health in Chinese Medicine is defined:  “The flow of unrestricted highly nutritious and oxygenated blood coursing freely throughout the body.”

This idea, so basic, is what Acupuncture, Asian Massage, and Herbs accomplish.  ALL these therapies open up the areas of the body that the central nervous system has locked down and thus begins to course nutrients and oxygenated blood to areas where there was a slow or lack of flow in the body.  This is why during a treatment you’ll almost be pain free but to keep it pain free you have to have several treatments to physically “heal” the injured area. If the body detects “danger” the body only knows how to lock things down to save the larger organism.  Sometimes in half sick patients the body forgets how to open these areas back up.

What a simple concept the ancients discovered and is how it could be developed thousands of years ago.   They only had simple tools available to them to make these body changes.  Needles at that time were HUGE and were either stone or wood which reset the central nervous system.  The hands were used to massage and open up locked muscle tissues which in turn opened up large muscle groups and large areas of body creating more blood flow.  Local plants were used and discovered to open various areas of the body which in turn helped return blood flow back to organ systems. At times it looks like magic but it’s very simple.  Return the flow of blood to an area and watch it heal.

The half sick patients have one common symptom…they’re always tired because the body is half shut down to conserve energy.  The body is in fear or shock that something is very wrong and to keep the blood and energy only at the most vital organs.  The Conventional Medical tests can either not find anything or that the normal medications they use are not working.  Why?  It’s because technically there’s nothing wrong.  It’s a Nervous System problem and a blood flow problem.

This is all we believe we do by using Acupuncture, Massage, and Herbs . We fix or reset the nervous system and reestablish optimal blood flow and this simple action has a H-U-G-E impact on health and wellness.

Testimonial

“After a car accident in 1998, I began seeing a massage therapist for weekly deep tissue massage. Although there was temporary pain relief I always felt the pain returned too quickly. In addition, my sleeping become erratic and I suffered from insomnia. The sleepless nights added to my daily stress which made the insomnia more severe. After going to Catch a Fish Acupuncture & Wellness, the lower back pain that had been my albatross for nearly five years gradually dissipated and my sleeping schedule became more regimented. Although I have not received treatment in over a month, I continue to reap the benefits of the therapy and the care and compassion Brian extends to his clients.”
